Sad end of a Youth Corper: Survives Boko Haram attacks, gunned down in Onitsha

The desire of every young undergraduate in Nigeria is to put on the uniform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and be addressed as a ‘corper’.

But fate was very cruel to 24-year-old Augusta Chizoba Ndukwu of Umufu-Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government area of Imo State. She was gruesomely murdered by unknown persons at Upper Iweka area of the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State. It was quite sad that Augusta, who had survived a series of hostilities and bombings by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in Adamawa State, where she observed her one-year mandatory national youth service, would painfully meet her untimely death in a place she felt was her home.

Her voice was filled with joy when she spoke to her relatives in Owerri on phone, telling them that she had finally come home. She told them that she was at the luxurious park in Upper Iweka, informing them also that she would join them in Owerri the next morning. But she never lived to see the faces of her loved ones, as she was gruesomely murdered by unknown persons that fateful night. Daily Sun gathered that the deceased, a graduate of Banking and Finance from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, was found lying in the pool of her own blood at the notorious fly-over at Upper Iweka on September 12.

According to a family member and the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Imo State Council, Chief Chris Akaraonye, Chizoba left Yola, the capital of Adamawa State on September 11 where she was having her NYSC primary assignment. She was travelling to Onitsha en route Owerri but could not get to her final destination that time because it was already late.

Chief Akaraonye further said the deceased, who had boarded a luxurious bus belonging to a popular transport company (names withheld), called her relatives to inform them that she could not make it again to Owerri. She also informed them that she had decided to pass the night at the company’s motor park together with other passengers. However, according to him, the following day, the family of the deceased, including her fiancé, waited in anxiety for the arrival of Chizoba in Owerri but to no avail. They then started trying her mobile line, but it had been switched off.

“At first, we thought she had a low battery. But after waiting for almost the whole day, we realized it was not usual and we decided to make moves to know why somebody that spoke to us at 10 pm last night could not be reached on phone or could not get to Owerri. In the course of our doubts and fears, we started going through different police stations and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) formations along the Onitsha-Owerri Road to ascertain if she was involved in a motor accident.

It was when we came to Onitsha that we found her corpse at the Onitsha General Mortuary with gunshot wounds to her chest.” In the next morning, early passersby were shocked to their marrow when they beheld the gory sight of a lady lying in the pool of her own blood at the Upper Iweka axis with two travelling bags filled with children clothing and popcorn. One of the eyewitnesses who pleaded anonymity said that the deceased was a victim of ritual killers.

She confirmed that she was found lying at the Upper Iweka flyover with gunshot wounds on her chest and two travelling bags containing children clothes and popcorn beside her corpse. Though the police swiftly said the deceased could be the victim of an armed robbery attack, they also revealed that the bags were planted by the assailants to divert police investigations, stressing that the police had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder.

The Campaign for Democracy (CD), South East Zone has reacted to the incident, describing it as a sin against God and humanity. The group called for proper investigations into the matter with a view to unravelling the circumstances surrounding the senseless killing of the deceased. The Chairman, South East Zone, Dede Uzor. A. Uzor condemned the act while calling on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubarka to personally detail a crack team of investigative police officers to look into the death of the corps member. Dede Uzor further questioned the omission of the deceased’s name in the passengers’ manifest and the alleged role that the transport company played when they returned the bags of the deceased to Yola without contacting the police.

Also speaking on the incident, Chairman of Ndigbo Unity Forum, Mr. Augustine Chukwudum condemned the act, describing it as the most wicked act and cruelty ever meted out to any corps member in the history of the state. Mr. Chukwudum also said his group would mobilize to make sure that criminal elements are sacked from the commercial city. He said the presence of such criminals was hindering the development of commerce and industry in the city.

However, policemen attached to the Central Police Station, CPS, Onitsha led by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr. Abdul Yusuf said they have arrested three persons in connection with the death of the corps member, adding that they were still working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder of the deceased. The police said, though, that it could be possible that the girl was murdered at the park by some criminals who then took her body to the Upper Iweka where they kept two bags containing clothes belonging to a boy of six years just to divert police investigations.

According to the police, the deceased was not a victim of ritual killing. It was further gathered that the driver of the luxury bus that brought the deceased from Yola to Onitsha on that fateful night, the manager of the transport company and one other person whose identities were not yet known as at press time have been arrested by the police.

They were picked up to allegedly help give insight to the death of the corps member as well as explain how and why the management of the company swiftly returned the bags of the deceased to Yola without informing the police. When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ralph Uzoigwe confirmed that three persons have been arrested by the police to help them in the course of investigations.

He appealed to the general public to help the police with more information that could lead to the arrest of the real killers of the corps member.

Pink Panther actor Herbert Lom dies at 95 Read

The London-based star appeared in more than 100 films, including “Spartacus” and “El Cid,” and acted alongside film greats including Charlton Heston and Kirk Douglas.

But Lom was most famous for playing Charles Dreyfus, boss to Peter Sellers’ befuddled Clouseau in the popular “Pink Panther” series, from “A Shot in the Dark” in 1964 to “Son of the Pink Panther” in 1993.

“It was a delight to him later in his career to be cast by Pink Panther producer and director Blake Edwards in a comedy role opposite Peter Sellers, and he hugely enjoyed that move,” Alec Lom said. “He had many funny stories about the antics that he and Peter Sellers got up to on the set. It was a nightmare working with Peter because he was a terrible giggler and, between my father and Peter’s laughter, they ruined dozens and dozens of takes.”

Born Herbert Karel Angelo Kuchacevic ze Schluderpacheru in Prague in 1917, Lom came to Britain at the start of World War II and began his career as a radio announcer with the BBC’s overseas service.

His first major movie role was as Napoleon in 1942?s “The Young Mr. Pitt.” The career that followed saw him cast often as a villain.

In “The Ladykillers,” one of the best-loved British films of the 1950s, Lom played a member of a ruthless crime gang fatally outsmarted by a mild-mannered old lady.

Horror roles included the title character in Hammer Studios’ “The Phantom of the Opera” in 1962, and Van Helsing in 1970?s “Count Dracula,” opposite Christopher Lee.

A postwar American career was stymied when Lom was denied a visa, though he later appeared on U.S. TV series including “The Streets Of San Francisco” and “Hawaii Five-O.”

In the 1950s, Lom also had success on the London stage playing the King of Siam in the original London production of the “The King And I” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, opposite Valerie

Bishops outraged by image portraying Neymar as Jesus Christ [PHOTO]

The Brazilian National Bishops Confederation (CNBB) has criticised a Brazilian sports magazine for publishing a photograph of Neymar being crucified in the same way as Jesus Christ.

Placar, which has become one of the most successful sports publications in Brazil, were using the picture as a metaphor to highlight the criticism the Santos star had been coming under for supposedly diving too often.

The Placar cover, which reads “the Brazilian ace turns scapegoat in a sport where everyone plays dirty”, was inspired by a 1970s issue of Spanish magazine Don Balon, which depicted Johan Cruyff in almost exactly the same way.

In a letter, signed by CNBB president Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis and general secretary Dom Leonardo Ulrich Steiner, the publication has been criticised for “showing disdain towards people’s feelings”.

A statement read: “The Brazilian National Bishops Confederation states that it feels severely outraged with the [photo] montage that is the cover of a sports magazine, where the image of Jesus Christ is seen with the face of a football player.

“We acknowledge freedom of speech as a fundamental principle of our state and [see it as necessary for] democratic co-existence, however, there are known limits for such.

“To ridiculise faith and show disdain towards peoples’ religious feelings by using the disrespectful use of the image of Jesus suggests manipulation and use of editorial resources as a means for commercial ends.

“This is a clear lack of respect that offends the most sacred image for Christians and updates, in a hazardous manner, the well-known resource of gaining attention by provocation.”

An online petition has now been launched against Placar’s use of the image of Neymar as Jesus Christ, which has gained over 7,000 signatures since its manifestation.

The album Titled Playlist, the forthcoming compilation album will feature all of the ‘Independent Women’ hitmaker’s number one singles 15 years on from their first gem ‘No, No, No (Part 1)’ in 1998.

Matthew Knowles, announced that their will be two projects from the trio, including new material earlier this year.

Speaking to the Huffington Post in July, ‘Single Ladies’ songstress, Beyoncé said there will be an album with new material in November.

A Brazilian man was arrested for trying to board a flight at Orlando International Airport while carrying 27 snakes that he’d wrapped in pantyhose and stashed away in inside stereo speakers,  authorities said.

Mateus Del Maso, Jr.  checked the speakers as luggage, but they were inspected and the snakes hidden inside were discovered.  The creatures never made it onto the aircraft.

Dal Maso purchased the serpents at the National Reptile Breeders Expo in Daytona Beach, Fla. He admitted he was going to carry the snakes – which he valued at about $10,000 – into Brazil and breed them for commercial purposes, a release from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said.

He did not have the proper authorization to take the reptiles — one ball python, seven boa constrictors, and 19 color morph corn snakes — into Brazil.

Dal Maso pleaded guilty on Aug. 23 to attempting to smuggle the snakes. He served two days in Orange County Jail and was fined $6,000. He was also sentenced to one year of supervised release, and must report to a probation officerwithin 72 hours of his arrival if he ever returns to the U.S.

The snakes were taken to an undisclosed care facility.

The arrest came about as a result of a multi-agency law enforcement operation that’s been dubbed “Operation Snake Pit.” The program seeks to prevent the illegal shipping of reptiles.....

Man Arrested Trying to Smuggle $7Million Out of Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Mallam Abubakar Tijani Sheriff (24), whom the Agency described as a bulk currency smuggler, as he a tempted to smuggle the sum of $7million out of the country.

The EFCC said in a statement today that Sheriff, 24, was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.

I spiritually punished people who maltreat- a self-confessed wizard

A fifteen-year old boy, (name withheld) threw a packed Circuit Court in Cape Coast into shock and disbelief on Tuesday when he revealed that as a wizard he had afflicted mishaps and severe beatings on a lot of people.

He was in court as the prosecution witness in a case in which his siblings; Juliet Mensah, a 22 year old fish monger at Yamoransa, and brother, Jude Mensah, a 36-year old unemployed, living in Accra, had accused one Mr. Alfred Passaw Quansah, a baker at Yamoransa, of being a wizard and transferring his witchcraft to the boy.

Peeved by the accusation, Mr. Quansah, who was the former landlord of his accusers’ elder Sister, Madam Adwoa Mensima, reported the matter to the police who arrested the two, but their accomplice, one Kwabena Badu bolted.

The boy told the bewildered court that as a wizard, he turned into a goat and fed on left overs at ‘chop bars’ and if maltreated during his expeditions, he retaliated by sending those people at night spiritually to his group to punish them.

“We subjected the person to severe beatings spiritually which would render their faces swollen by morning” he said, and added that he has now been exorcised.

Explaining further, the boy said witches and wizards could turn into goats and any other animal they wished to turn into and when asked where he got the witchcraft, he told the court that it was given to him through food by his landlord about two years ago.

Giving the facts of the case at the court presided over by Mrs. Florence Kai Otu, the Prosecutor, General Sergeant Charles Effah, said that about two years ago, the boy lived with his elder Sister Madam Mensima as tenants in the house of Mr. Quansah at Yamoransa, near Cape Coast.

He said the boy misconducted himself severally, and Mr. Quansah who could no longer stand his behavior evicted his sister from the house, after which the boy relocated to Accra to live with his elder brother Jude Mensah.

The Prosecutor said the boy continued his truancy and bad conduct in Accra, and so Jude Mensah sent him to a prayer camp where it was alleged that the boy was a wizard, and when questioned about the source of his witchcraft he mentioned Mr. Quansah as the one who gave it to him.

This revelation led Mensah and his sister together with Badu to the house of Quansah on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at about 1700hrs and accused him of being a wizard, hooted and mocked him, in an attempt to force him to the said prayer camp.

Mr. Quansah then reported the matter to the police and the accused persons, Juliet and Mensah were arrested, and charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace, after investigations.

An uncle of the accused persons who was in court pleaded with the court to discontinue the case to pave the way for an amicable settlement at home but Mr. Quansah agreed on the condition that the spiritualist at the said prayer camp declare him of his innocence.

The accused persons should also apologize and retract their statement that he was a wizard.

Mensah was however remanded in police custody whereas Juliet was granted bail in the sum of GH¢5000 with three sureties for the reason that she was nursing a one-year old baby.

The case has been adjourned until Friday, September 28.

Woman with two vaginas rejects $1million offer to make adult film

A woman with two vaginas  who has captured the attention of the pórn industry has said she would never consider accepting any role in a film.

Hazel Jones appeared on TV earlier this week, where she revealed she was diagnosed with ‘uterús didelphys’ – a condition which means she has two wombs and two cervixes.

The 27-year-old has since been approached by Vivid Entertainment, a U.S. ádult film production company.

But the horrified blonde, from High Wycombe, claims she would turned down any deal.

According to This Morning, she said: ‘I have never received any offers of this kind of work nor would I never consider doing it in a million years. ‘I just want to be left alone.’

The response comes after founder of Vivid Steven Hirsch wrote a letter to Ms Jones offering her $1m to star in one of his films, TMZ.com revealed. In the letter, Hirsch wrote: ‘You are obviously an extraordinary woman and I would like to make you an offer to star in an upcoming Vivid production.
‘We would pay you up to $1 million for your services.’

Hirsch also promised to cover travel and accommodation expenses, as the film would be shot in Los Angeles.

Hirsch wrote: ‘We would fly you out to L.A. as soon as you are available and provide you with first class accommodations’

A spokesperson for Vivid confirmed the offer, saying: ‘It’s true. ‘Steven made an offer to Hazel Jones.’

Vivid became the first studio to introduce celebrity séx tapés, showing footage of Pamela Anderson and then-husband Tommy Lee and Kim Kardashian. Hazel Jones has yet to respond to the offer.

But she told ITV’s This Morning she was comfortable with having the condition – despite the fact she had to effectively lose her vírginity twice.

‘Once I found out what it was I told everybody,’ she told TV hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

‘I thought it was amazing and it’s definitely an ice-breaker at parties’ She added: ‘If women want to have a look, I’m quite happy to show them, it’s not something I’m embarrassed by.’

Hazel went to the doctor after her long-term boyfriend told her she was ‘different’ in the genital area.

Hazel said previously she had found séx very uncomfortable, but now she didn’t suffer any adverse effects.

She turned down surgery as it could have left significant scar tissue.

Nigerians are UK’s 4th biggest foreign spenders – Report

Every year, Simi Osomo (pictured above) makes six trips to London from Nigeria. The 25-year-old spends about two weeks here and every day she goes shopping. Today she’s at the boutique shop Matches Townhouse in Marylebone with a personal shopper. “When it comes to shopping and Nigerians, I can tell you it’s just what we have to do,” she tells dailypo while admiring the patterned dresses.

For Nigerians, London is a shopping mecca. Visitors from the West African country are the UK’s fourth biggest foreign spenders, parting with an average of £500 in each luxury shop they visit — four times what UK shoppers typically spend. When Osomo was as  how much a two-week shopping trip in London costs she makes a bashful face. “Ooh, should I really be saying this? It depends, but most times about £5,000.”

Osomo is wearing a green top from Zara that’s “the colour of the Nigerian flag”, blue skinny jeans and new Christian Louboutin shoes. Later today she’s going to buy an iPhone 5 for her sister.

“You can get lots of things in Lagos but they are cheaper here and you get to take a holiday and relax a bit. It’s only six hours away.” The number of Nigerian visitors to the UK increased by more than 50 per cent to 142,000 a year between 1991 and 2011, according to the Office for National Statistics. Nigeria is projected to become Africa’s biggest economy by next year and the world’s fifth most populous country by 2050, and London is cashing in.

Debenhams’ Oxford Street branch has put up signs in Hausa, one of the official Nigerian languages, and said customers from this part of West Africa are its biggest overseas spenders. Yet Osomo says it’s not just rich Nigerians who come over. “Middle-class people can afford to come and spend £600 on shopping in a week here. What I like about the UK is that it doesn’t discriminate. As long as you’re able to prove you have an income, accommodation in London and a return ticket, the authorities are more than willing to give you a visa. It’s closer than America and the customer service here is phenomenal.”

Back home in Lagos, the technology market has been flooded with fake products from China, which means more people are coming to London for electronic goods and are even taking items back to sell. “No one wants to spend more than 100,000 naira (£390) and find out it is fake, so they prefer to come over for a holiday and buy something they know is real and has a guarantee in case something goes wrong.”

Marks & Spencer is one of Osomo’s favourite shops. “I love their fajitas. You can’t get them in Nigeria. I also buy soy sauce and Thai green curry paste, which is good because it lasts for a long time. Oh, and Crunchy Nut cereal, Skittles, Maltesers and tea. There’s nothing like a British cuppa. I get Lipton, PG and green tea.” She likes the variety of London. “I love Zara, H&M, Topshop. But if I want something more high end, there’s Sloane Street.”

More than £3 billion a year is spent on high-end goods in London, according to the London Luxury Quarter Report, and it predicts this will rise to £4.5 billion by 2020, with new shops including Burberry’s flagship fuelling the trend. Luxury concierge services are also popular. Osomo is a client of Quintessentially, which organises shopping trips and parties for her and has an office in Lagos.

Although summer is the height of the shopping season, Osomo likes to come back for the January sales too. Her mother, a lawyer, and father, a businessman, often join her. She has just finished a law degree and is about to start a job in fashion journalism, which she hopes will give her enough holidays for trips to London. But flights can get booked up quickly.

“You don’t want to get the Lagos to London flight in July. It’s packed with parents and their kids making noise.” Return flights at high season start at about £369.

But what about getting her haul of shopping back from London to Lagos? That, says Osomo, is costly. “All I pack when I come over is one pair of jeans and three tops. I bring two big suitcases but I always have to get another one and pay for excess baggage. I never learn.” British Airways has increased its excess baggage charge on flights from London to Lagos from £40 to £97 per suitcase in the past year. “They must have realised we always put an extra bag in and thought they’d try to make money out of it,” says Osomo.

Fashion-wise, she still picks up the odd item in Nigeria. Six months ago Zara opened an outlet store in Lagos, and Mango has been there for about a year. “Zara is affordable because it’s an outlet but what I find is that things are a bit last season. Nigeria’s hot all the time so there are always maxi dresses and swimwear but the colours are boring and we lack variety. Customer service is not great and some shops can get really crowded, which is challenging.” There is a burgeoning online shopping industry in Nigeria too. Currently, ASOS is the only shop that ships to Lagos free of charge and everyone Osomo’s age uses it.

“Nigeria is a fun place, I’d encourage people to go. Shopping is evolving. In five years I think a lot of stores will come to Nigeria because there is a gap in the market. Ten years ago I never thought Zara would come to Nigeria. I believe in the next five years we will catch up. But I still love London and won’t stop coming here.”
