Man visits every nation without flying

HUGHES GRAHAM

A BRITON has celebrated claiming to be the first person to have visited every sovereign nation on the globe without flying, after crossing into the world’s youngest country, South Sudan.

Graham Hughes, 33, took almost four years to tick 201 countries off his list, including all 193 members of the United Nations, as well as destinations that include Kosovo, Palestine, Taiwan,Vatican City and Western Sahara.
“I’ve been travelling now for 1426 days, that’s 203 weeks, almost four years,” said the cowboy-hat wearing globetrotter as he quaffed warm fizzy wine in the tropical heat, soon after crossing the border from Uganda on Monday.
“I started in Uruguay on January 1, 2009, and I’ve been travelling pretty much non-stop since then to try and be the first person to visit every country in the world without flying, and today, I just have.”
Hughes based his journey on four key rules: he could not fly, must not drive his own transport, must take “scheduled ground transport” and to qualify as a visit to a country he “must step foot on dry land”.
“The main highlight … has been the reaffirmation of my faith in humanity and the fact that people I’ve met on the road have been so friendly,” he said.
Hughes, who comes originally from Liverpool and who also raised money for WaterAid, a British charity that works to provide clean water, had already visited northern Sudan.
South Sudan, which won independence from Sudan in July last year, was not a country when he started his travels.
“Most people thought that I was a bit mad. A lot of people thought it was impossible,” he told AFP in Juba.
Many were concerned as to how he would visit conflict-wracked nations such as Afghanistan, Iraq or Somalia, although few border controls meant that “those were the easy countries to get to”, he said.
Instead, the real challenge proved to be “those tiny island nations out in the world … the guys that turn up to the Olympics with a flag and two athletes”, and where perhaps only one supply ship visits each month.
His journey included “four days crossing open ocean in a leaky wooden boat to reach Cape Verde”, but he was also “imprisoned for a week in Congo and was arrested whilst attempting to sneak into Russia”.
He also reports to have “tip-toed into North Korea”, and in 2009 visited 133 nations, setting the Guinness World Record for the most nations visited in one year by scheduled ground transport.
His website shows photographs of Hughes in every nation, as well as images of his vast array of visas filling four passports.

Cough Syrup Kills 13 In Pakistan

ayariga_cough_mixture
LAHORE, Pakistan — Sixteen people have died in Pakistan after drinking cough syrup suspected of being toxic, police said Monday after three additional victims expired in hospital. All those affected by the syrup were drug addicts who apparently drank it to get high, said police officer Multan Khan.
Khan said they died at various hospitals in the eastern city of Lahore over the past three days. Two people are still being treated at the city’s main hospital. Police arrested the owners of three drug stores where the cough syrup was sold and sent a sample for analysis to determine whether it was toxic, Khan added.
Elsewhere in the country, a bomb hidden in a cement construction block exploded in the southern city of Karachi, killing one person, said senior police officer Farooq Awan. Four other people were wounded, he said. The bomb contained about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of explosives and was detonated by a mobile phone, said Awan.
Pakistan suspended mobile phone service throughout most of the country on Saturday and Sunday to prevent attacks against Shiite Muslims during a major religious commemoration. Despite the ban, a pair of bombings over the weekend killed at least 13 people.
Awan, the police officer, said he suspected the bomb in Karachi was meant to target Shiites over the weekend, but militants were not able to detonate it at the time because of the mobile phone ban. Shiites are currently observing the holy month of Muharram. Pakistani Shiites on Sunday marked Ashoura, the most important day of the month.
Pakistan has a long history of Sunni Muslim extremists targeting Shiites, who they consider heretics. Also Monday, police in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, found and defused a bomb planted underneath the car of one of Pakistan’s most prominent TV anchors, Hamid Mir of Geo Television.
The bomb was made up of half a kilogram (1 pound) of explosives stuffed in a tin can, said Islamabad police chief Bani Amin. It was placed in a bag and attached to the bottom of Mir’s car, said Amin.
One of Mir’s neighbors noticed the bomb underneath the car after the TV anchor returned from a local market, and the police were notified, said Rana Jawad, a senior official at Geo TV.

10 feared dead as gunmen attack three banks in Edo State

A gang of gunmen this evening invaded the town of Auchi in Edo state, attacking three major banks.
Sources say the banks, namely; First Bank, GuarantyTrust and Access bank, may have received huge deposits earlier in the day as they were specifically targeted.
The robbers it was learnt used large cache of dynamites to blow open the doors and strongrooms of the banks.
The country has literally been under seige since last week when the Nigerian military declared 19 leaders of the Boko Haram sect wanted.
Monday evening attack which seems like a well-planned robbery operation, saw free use of assorted rifles and various sophisticated weapons by the assailants.
Witnesses say at least 10 persons were killed when the bandits engaged security forces in a gun duel that lasted over an hour. It is still unkown which side recorded casualty, but some residents were reportedly hit by stray bullets.
The police however is yet to make any official statement on the incident.

Hunger strike: Ex-banker listens to Fashola, suspends protest

Mr. Olubiyi Odunaro, a 53-year-old former employee of Hallmark Bank Plc who had for the past 2 weeks embarked on an indefinite hunger strike, demanding for the payment of his terminal benefit and his colleagues finally listened to the voice of reason yesterday and suspended his indefinite hunger strike.
The former Banker had been living on the street without food since November 12, protesting against the non-payment his benefit and 14000 others who were relieved from Hallmark bank after it failed to meet up with the Central Bank’s recapitalization policy in 2005.
Odunaro reconsidered his decision to remain on the street in protest, and without food when the state government’s delegation stormed the Mobolaji Bank-Anthony way where he pitched his tent against the concerned authority to appeal to him, and to assure him of the state’s government support in the fight. The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Justice and Law Reform, Mr. Lanre Akinsola and the President, Association of ex-staff of Non-Consolidated Banks, Mr. Magnus Maduka at the garden on Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way to appeal to the protester.
According to Odunaro, “On this strike, I am not acting alone. It is a struggle for me and others who are affected. Since I have received the assurance from my association that I should suspend it; and that the state governor, is now aware of the issue, I will do so today.”
The Ex-Banker who respected the appeal of the Lagos State government was rushed to the General Hospital in an ambulance service in order to get an early treatment and to regain his health. Speaking further, Odunaro said “I am suspending it and I would give the state government the benefit of the doubt. I know the state government has been up and doing on various issues concerning its residents”
Speaking on the matter, Ipaye said: “This is a very pathetic situation and immediately the Governor, Babatunde Fashola, read about it in the media, he mandated the office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and the office of the Senior Special Assistance on Justice and Law Reform to set up an inter-ministerial committee that would act on behalf of the state government on the issue.
“The most important thing to the state government is the health of Odunaro. So the first thing we would do is to provide medical service to him. This is because it is an issue concerning a man who has been on hunger strike for the past 15 days. We believe that there is an urgent need for medical attention, and that was why we have brought medical personnel to covey him to the General Hospital.”
The Attorney-General avowed thus “ it is when one is alive that he or she would be able to fight for his rights”, stressing that, “We do not want any causality. It is not in the interest of the state government for any of its residence to die.”
He promised that the Lagos state Government through the Directorate of Citizens Right and other agencies would offer free legal service while ensuring that justice is done in the matter.
According to him, “The aim of the government is to ensure that justice is achieved and they get their entitlement as fast as possible. We will be working with the lawyers of the affected Ex-Bankers. We are not concerned about who get the result, what we are more concerned about is the result.”
“The government is for the people and that was why we have pleaded with him that he should give the state government the opportunity to wade in. And immediately, we will discuss with all relevant authorities to ensure that Odunaro and others get their entitlement.

Jaji bomb blast: Death toll rises to 15, unofficial figure stands at 30

The number of casualties in the last Sunday’s bomb blast at St Andrew’s Anglican Church of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, AFCSC, Jaji, Kaduna State continues to rise as it has been disclosed that death toll now stands at 15 while the number of injured persons cannot be ascertained.
However unconfirmed sources have revealed that over 40 people are presently receiving treatment in the hospital. Jaji is only 40 kilometres north of the city of Kaduna.
The official figure of 15 who were reportedly killed in the blast has been disputed by unofficial report which claimed that about 30 people were killed in the blast while over 50 people were said to have been seriously injured.
But on the contrary, the Commandant of the College, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Abdullahi Kure, told newsmen that only 15 people were killed in the blast. He made this statement while taking the state Governor, Patrick Yakowa round the church during the governor’s visit to the scene of the bomb blast at the military barrack church in Jaji yesterday.
NAF, in the college, Air Commodore Alechenu Ekagbo, and some children were said to be part of those who suffered serious injuries.
The state Governor, Patrick Yakowa had described the incident as ‘’a devastating event that calls for sober reflection.”
He said: “The bombing of a church within a premier institution like AFCSC is a wake-up call to all security agencies within the country to continue to sit up so as to fashion out a solution on how to curb the incidents of bombing or terrorism. The biggest project now in Nigeria should be the search for peace so that the enormous potentials ofNigeriacan be fully harnessed. Religious bigotry or terrorism will only destroy Nigeriainstead of building it.”
The Governor in a sober mood had promised to take care of the medical bills of the injured victims who are currently in the hospital.
DailyPost could not confirm the actual casualty figure as the military had condoned off the hospital for about 1kilometre, making it difficult for journalists to have access to the hospital....

Chris Brown deletes Twitter account after feisty exchange over Rihanna with comedian

Chris Brown has deleted his Twitter account following a furious exchange of scathing messages with US comic Jenny Johnson.
The Don’t Judge Me singer was dragged into the bitter row with the 30-year-old TV star when he sent a tweet about how old he looks for his age.
Chris wrote: “I look old as f**k! I’m only 23.”
Jenny then replied: “I know! Being a worthless piece of s**t can really age a person. RT.”
Chris decided that he wasn’t going to take the abusive message lying down and responded with a tirade of abusive tweets aimed at the comedienne who has regularly poked fun at him since his conviction for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
He wrote back: “Take them teeth out when u Sucking my d*** HOE.”
Jenny then responded “Your mom must be so proud of you,” to which Chris quipped back “mom says hello… She told me not to s**** in ur mouth, wanted me to s*** right on the retina.”
As the argument continued with both sides showing their disdain for one another, Chris managed to cause even further offence by posting the question “just ask Rihanna if she mad??????”
The posting prompted Jenny to suggest he “get some help. Seriously.”
At one point Rihanna – who tweeted an image of Chris topless in bed yesterday – even allegedly got involved in the dispute by uploading an image of the conversation to her Instagram page along with the caption “who has the time” but quickly deleted the post.
The argument ended when Jenny decided to stop taunting Chris, writing: “Okay. I’m done. All I got from that exchange with Chris Brown is that he wants to s**t and fart on me.
“I have zero respect for a person who seems unapologetic for the terrible crime he committed and shows no signs of changing.”
Chris followed by saying: “Back to life… To teambreezy… Know that I’m not upset. Just felt like entertaining the ignorance. These bitches crazy..
Further proved my point of how immature society is. #CarpeDiem. Catch me in traffic…”
He then removed his Twitter account.

Chris Brown Attacks Female Comedy Writer (NSFW) UPDATE: As of Sunday night, Chris Brown’s Twitter account appears to be offline.

Chris Brown Back In Court, Fails Drug Test; Rihanna Tweets She's Praying For Him

UPDATE: As of Sunday night, Chris Brown’s Twitter account appears to be offline.
many people on Twitter, former news producer and current comedy writer Jenny Johnson (under her handle @JennyJohnsonHi5) frequently makes fun at the expense of controversial R&B singer Chris Brown. But unlike most, Johnson found herself the target of an extended vulgar, sexist response from Brown on Sunday afternoon.
Johnson, who is often cited as one of the funniest presences on Twitter, has poked fun at Brown ever since his 2009 arrest for beating his former (and maybe current?) girlfriend Rihanna, largely due to his apparent lack of remorse. One of Johnson’s most popular tweets, “Call me old fashioned, but Chris Brown should be in prison,” was retweeted 1,869 times.
But it wasn’t until she tweeted the following that she grabbed Brown’s attention: “I know! Being a worthless piece of shit can really age a person. RT @chrisbrown: I look old as fuck! I’m only 23…”
Brown, who has 11.6 million followers on Twitter, responded by hurling sexual, graphic insults toward Johnson. (The full, NSFW exchange is below.)
This is hardly the first time Brown has found himself in trouble due to Twitter. Earlier this month, the singer posted a photo of himself dressed as a terrorist for Halloween, which many found to be racist. In fact, he’s even gotten into it with Johnson (as well as a few other funny folks on Twitter) in the past, but never to such a disgusting degree.
After his performance at the Grammys earlier this year, Brown fired off aggressive tweets directed at his critics before deleting them. Whether he deletes this ugly episode with Johnson remains to be seen — but don’t worry, we have screengrabs just in case.
Again, the Twitter exchange below is very NSFW.
