Guns for Beyoncé and Jay-Z Concert Tickets?

BeyonceAccording to BET Former outkast manager Michael "Blue" Williams is leading an initiative that aims to rid New York City of its illegal gun problem. The “Guns for Greatness” program encourages young people to trade in their firearms in exchange for mentor-ship and possible prizes, including BeyoncĂ© and Jay-Z concert tickets.
Williams has already raised $75,000 for the program and is seeking support from NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly to get the program moving. Plans are in order to launch the private-sector gun buyback program on March 23 at a Brooklyn church.
"This program aims to provide young people with an opportunity to receive guidance and inspiration from committed mentors," reads a proposal Williams wrote to Commissioner Kelly. He says that the program will enable the city’s at-risk youth "to experience possibilities other than a life surrounded by gun violence and unnecessary shootings and killing."
Williams, who made his name managing the careers of OutKast and Goodie Mob, is dedicated to using his influence in the music industry to get relevant stars involved. "Our goal is to reach out to individuals who are in my industry, in my world and who I have an association with and get their support," Williams said Monday. The 43-year-old mogul also mentioned his desire to involve BeyoncĂ© and Jay-Z, both of whom will be performing in New York later this year.
The NYPD began an effort to buy back guns in 2008 and successfully collected 2,632 firearms off of New York streets. With public cooperation dwindling of late, Williams’ plan may help boost motivation.
Williams cited the passing of business partner Chris Lighty, who shot himself to death last August, as well as his recent gun possession arrest at LaGuardia Airport, as his motivation for starting the program. The program would focus on reaching young black and Latino men ages 16 to 36 with incentives that include gifts worth upwards of $250 in addition to mentor ship.

Beyoncé Knowles has been well prepared for superstardom

Singing and dancing in stilettos since the age of nine, BeyoncĂ© Knowles has been well prepared for superstardom. The Texan triple-threat began as lead singer of the Grammy-winning Destiny’s Child, one of the biggest female groups of all time (40 million albums sold worldwide). Her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously In Love, featured her then-boyfriend Jay-Z on her first single, “Crazy In Love.” BeyoncĂ© has since released three more solo albums, the most recent being 2011's 4,  with hits like “Irreplaceable” and “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”; collaborated with superstars like Shakira and Lady Gaga; starred in films like Dreamgirls and Cadillac Records; and sung the Etta James classic “At Last” while President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama danced following his 2008 inauguration. In addition to running the fashion label House of DerĂ©on with her mother Tina, BeyoncĂ© (a.k.a. Sasha Fierce) married rap mogul Jay-Z and turned the gossip world upside down when on January 7, 2012, they gave birth to their first child, Blue Ivy Carter.

iROKOtv CEO Jason Njoku: "Nollywood Films Try to Tell Africa's Story"

Jason NjokuDubbed the “Netflix of Africa” iROKOtv has officially brought Nollywood films to the Internet and to viewers all around the globe. iROKOtv CEO Jason Njoku’s 3-year-old company now has 800,000 registered users and offices in London, New York, Johannesburg and Lagos. The tech entrepreneur spoke to BET.com about how he’s helping to digitally distribute the popular Nigerian films.

Would you define Nollywood for us?Nollywood is a film industry centered in mostly Nigeria and Ghana. But they are largely Nigerian productions, which create films for Africans about Africans. Many of the movies centre around the dynamics of nuclear families and how they deal with traditional stories and issues from pre-colonial Africa. Other movies are based around marriage, religion, royalty, lack of success and even coping with illness. Nollywood films try to tell Africa’s story in modern life.
How did you come up with the idea for iROKOtv?
I grew up in the United Kingdom. I largely benefited from the power of the Internet, from usage and sites like Netflix. I heard about Nollywood in 2009 and I saw that my mum spent most of her spare time watching these movies. She would ask me to get her some good ones. I would go on-line to try to find them and I found it pretty amazing there wasn't a way for her to buy them. The only way to get them was down at the local mum and pop store. It was really amazing and popular content, but the distribution was lacking.
Once you realized the demand for Nollywood films, when did you know you could be a part of the business of distributing them?
I jumped on a plane from London to Lagos to do a bit of fact finding and I found that no one was attempting to do this. So I thought it would be a good idea for someone like myself to take it on. I originally negotiated with a handful of production houses. We put a couple of hundred movies on-line  and we were able to make a return on our investment. We kept acquiring more movies and putting them on-line.
Where does most of iROKOtv’s traffic come from?
Our traffic comes from London, India, Australia, Moldavia, the Caribbean and our largest market is in the United States. We've made the accessibility and the discovery of these movies that much easier. We've partnered with the production houses to help them deliver their movies to as many people as possible.
What do you think has been key to iROKOtv’s booming success?
Nollywood is one of the largest film industries to emerge and definitely one of the most successful ones. The question became how would people globally around the world gain access to this popular content from Africa? What we did at iROKOtv is to make available the largest catalog of Nigerian movies. We have 5,000 movies available to watch on our website. We've multiplied the ability to watch and enjoy these films. The movies have been out there for a long time — they've been very popular from day one. We took great content and made it widely available to anyone who has an Internet connection.

Co-founder BeyoncĂ© Knowles-Carter said “I have always felt strongly about equal opportunity for women. Girls have to be taught from early on that they are strong and capable of being anything they want to be. It’s up to us to change the statistics for women around the world. I’m honored to be in the company of women who live fearlessly and set an example for the next generation of young ladies.”

5 Fights Every Couple Has To Have At Least Once

Therapists come clean on the fights that just about every loving couple has to confront — and overcome — before sailing into long-term romantic bliss.
By Valerie Ross and Leigh Newman
1. The ‘You Spent How Much On Pork Sausages?!’ Fight
“In all my years of practice,” says Sharon Gilchrest O’Neill, author of A Short Guide to a Happy Marriage, “I have only ever seen two or three couples where both partners have viewed money exactly the same. When I come across a couple like that, I am totally shocked.” The root of the conflict is sometimes the expected “He spends too much” (or “She spends too much”) argument. But more often that not it’s also the difference between what we admire and accept about our partners and what that approval costs without our knowledge. For example, a husband may have a commitment to locally sourced food. The wife may be in complete agreement — because locally sourced food is good for the environment — that is, until she sees the price tag on the teeny-tiny package of three measly pork sausages: $14! At which point she goes berserk. Another common version: A man adores his partner’s goldeny, tawny-ish, honey-dazzled hair, only to realize, too late, that blond highlights cost $150, every three months.
The key to moving past this conflict is, admittedly, boring and also known as: Drawing Up a Budget Together. But the accounting allows each of you to understandwhy you’re spending what you’re spending, eliminating any discrepancies between what you love about your partner and what you love about not being broke.
2. The ‘If I Lie Here With My Eyes Closed, Maybe He’ll Think I’m Asleep’ Fight, Or The ‘He’s Lying There With His Eyes Closed, Hoping I Think He’s Asleep!’ Fight
However hot things start out, there are times when the passion lags — and one person in particular isn’t happy about it. We tend to blame the issue on our all-consuming jobs, demanding kids or the pace of life in the 21st century. But — surprise! — that’s probably not always the core of the dispute. Alexandra Solomon, a clinical psychologist and marriage therapist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, says an overlooked issue is the passage of time. “How someone is sexually at 23 is going to be different at 33 and 43,” she says. “Our sex drive is always changing, our interests are always changing and our bodies are always changing.” In the early part of a relationship, a woman may initiate making love. Ten years later, she doesn’t, and her husband may either lie there wishing she would start things up or do so himself. Learning how to work through this conflict early is crucial, “since you’ll likely be renegotiating terms throughout a relationship.”
3. The ‘Tuesday At Your Mother’s House?!’ Fight
Be it Yom Kippur, Easter or Flag Day, most of us are prepared for disputes over which family (his or mine?) we’re going to spend the holidays with. The less recognized issue is the rest of the year — all those ordinary Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and other days of the year that one spouse plans on spending with his extended kin while the other spouse plans on spending in front of the TV or on the patio with her new barbeque.
Part of the reason why battles of those “everyday” days get heated is that often “we’re forgetting that other additional family… our own,” says O’Neill. In other words, while we deal with how much time we’re going to spend with parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, we may overlook carving out some of those Sundays or holidays for our own nuclear family.
4. The ‘No Self-Respecting, Civilized Person Would Sleep That Way’ Fight
So many people are getting married after they’ve taken care of their education or pursued that crazy, totally demanding job. The national average for men is 29, and for women, 27 — six years older than 50 years ago. This may mean that each of you is wiser, smarter and more ready to deal with huge life challenges. But it also may mean that one of you likes using a top sheet… while the other thinks that’s a waste of time and detergent, and prefers a fitted sheet with just a duvet. Or one of you loves to use bottled dressing… while the other insists on homemade gourmet oil and vinegar. Or one of you just plain refuses to use fabric softener! For no reason! So there! As Don Baucom, a marital therapist and clinical psychologist at the University of North Carolina, says, “Living with someone else can create difficulties. You’ve been going through life the way you’ve always done it, but now there are problems because you’re faced with someone who’s doing things in a way that’s healthy for them, but it’s not your way.” As a couple, you have to decide if you’re going to share household responsibilities (and swap methods) or divvy up the chores and just agree that however the job is done by the other person is… a job done.
5. The ‘Help Me! But… Don’t Help Me!’ Fight
A lot of couples turn to each other for support when they have a challenging individual goal, only to end up arguing because either they aren’t getting enough assistance or the assistance that they are getting makes them feel like a bit of a failure. For example, a husband might say, “I want to stop eating a bag of cookies before bed, and I want your help.” And the wife might say, “You’re right, you do need to stop eating a bag of cookies before bed, and I’m ready to help.” And then the husband might say, “What?! You think I need to stop eating a bag of cookies before bed?! You think I’m a fat piggy?!”
It would be easy to think that this conflict is simply about weight — and the sensitivities about diets that cloud the issue. But Benjamin Karney, co-director of UCLA’s Relationship Institute, has a more revealing insight. “We all want to support our partners unconditionally, just as they are, and help them change to become the people they want to be,” he says. There are plenty of ways to help without alienating your beloved. Take the above example. When a husband says, “I want to stop eating a bag of cookies before bed, and I want your help,” the wife might say, “Great! I’m on board. What kind of help would work for you?” And then the husband might say, “Hmm… can we stop buying Oreos?” Or “Can you hide the Oreos?” Or “Can you tell me I’m handsome when I go to open a pack of Oreos?” All of which will make him feel more encouraged by your encouragement.

Beauty Tips: Easy Steps To Get Smokey Eyes

The Smokey eye is both sexy and classic. Smokey eyes have been a big style for quite awhile and there's no sign this particular trend is dying. The key to the perfect Smokey eye is proper blending. Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to get the perfect Smokey eye.
1.    Start with a black cream eye shadow/shade stick on your eyelid and blend out the edges with a clean blending brush. If you crease easily underneath your eye you should put a nude cream shadow/ primer there as well.

2.   Wash on some matte grey eye shadow around the black shadow so that you get a Smokey finish. Put it underneath the eye as well.

3.    No dark Smokey eye without eye-liner! Grab a black soft eye-liner and line along both the upper and the lower lash line and on the waterline. Blend it out and between the lashes with a small brush.
4.    Now that we've smoked out the eye-liner it´s easier to go in with the black eye shadow so that we make sure we don´t get too much black and end up with panda eyes. Put the black in the outer corner and inner corner to get some depth, and leave the middle part as it is.
5.    Get some shadow on the brush and tap the brush to get rid of glitter that is in danger of falling down on your cheeks. Dab the brush carefully on the centre of your eye lid, do not stroke it as with other eye shadows.
6.    Use the same technique to dab on some of the same eye shadow underneath the eye as well leaving the outer part dark. Brush on a light slightly shimmery eye shadow on the brow bone to lift the eyebrows.

7.    Slap on a couple of coats of a volume mascara and you´re done. Remember to keep the rest of your face nude for dark make-up like this.

OPINION: And Kim Kardashian Puts A Hole In Darey's "Love... Like A Movie" Concert

HELLO EBV READER THIS IS A MUST READ ...Biodun Acada wrote this.....I was finding it so difficult to do this review based on two facts. One, that people may take it as a misrepresentation and may decided to castigate Darey for even thinking of inviting Kim Kardashian to "co-host" his highly successful theatrical Valentines concert tagged "Love... Like A Movie". Secondly, for the fear of it going viral on line  thereby putting a dent in Darey's blossoming career. I sparsely go to Nigerian events lately due to the simple fact that I hardly enjoyed it because of too many ills that could have been avoided especially when it comes to been timely and technical hitches which used to mar the events, but I decided to attend Darey's Vals concert based on the facts that I owe him one (he voluntarily hosted my first BlackBerry Fever Party for Free) and based on the hype and publicity build up that was excellently done before the event which generated enough interest and also because of the side-attractions of the circus ringers that were announced will be part of the show. What took the hype and publicity to a frenzy height was the announcement of Kim Kardashian, the top American reality show star to "co-host" the concert. Been a big fan (no apologies, lol), it was a perfect opportunity to see this beautiful reality show stunner which I know many of her Nigerian fans were also hoping to use to see the petite celebs  This was what turned out to be the biggest mistake the show organisers made. I felt so disappointed that Kim Kardashian announcement to "co-host" the event didn't become a reality after-all, she only graced the stage for less than a minute and the sad (or good) part was that her appearance wasn't even felt because from the opening of the show which started few minutes after 8pm till like pm Darey mesmerised us, his fans and guests alike with his stage artistry and sonorous voice, churning out various hits upon hits both from his own songs and international classic love songs.
Darey also find solace and support in his fellow Nigerian artistes like 2face  Waje, Timi Dakolo, Praize, etc who gave good accounts of themselves by jamming to live band throughout the show. Kudos also to Circque du Soleil an extreme theatre company for their spectacular choreography and displays. The show was so well choreographed. The stage, lighting and sound was simply out of this world. The circus ringers sure added colours and fun to the concert with their gymnastics and acrobatic moves. I doubted if I've seen anything like this in recent times. For that 2 and half hours, Darey held us spellbound! Did we miss Kim Kardashian not to have fully been part of the concert? It's capital NO! What I was expecting from the organisers was for Kim to have signed autographs for her fans, take pictures with people on the Red Carpet and be in charge of the stage and not just to have eaten dinner with the Platinum Ticket holders and taken pictures with few selected celebrities. She would have even visited and donated to a charity home since it's even a season of love and that in itself would have boosted her image. Even considering the staggering $500k been rumoured she collected for the show which to me is false and outrageous (that's another story entirely, so watch out for my piece "Don't Believe The Hype" on that).
I think it's high time our Nigerian artistes learn from issues like these and have confidence in themselves to stage a good show. No harm in inviting foreign act(s) that you know will add values to your event. Darey's concert is a case study on how a show should be organized. It was a 5 hour of cheerful bliss. From publicity, organisation, technicalities, timing and stage craft. With "Love... Like A Movie" concert, Darey scored A and had taken concerts packaging to the next level. In all, it was an amazing show that worth every penny spent on its ticket. Lol!
