Alek Wek makes her way back home for celebrations

World renowned Sudanese model Alek Wek makes her first trip back to South Sudan this weekend since her family fled civil war back home and sought asylum in the UK.
Wek, who is a supermodel in every right, will pass through Nairobi before heading on to South Sudan, for that country’s first independence anniversary.Wek has been working as a refugee advocate for the UNHCR, using her influence to help gather momentum for the agency’s work to place and support refugees.
Apart from attending the week-long celebrations, the model will meet with South Sudan’s First Lady, key officials, and several prominent Sudanese who have returned home to rebuild their lives.
Wek will be a special guest at TEDX Juba in the course of the week where she will share her vision on her country’s future, apart from visiting refugee camps in her hometown of Wau.
Last year, South Sudan seceded from Sudan and became the newest republic in the world. Border disputes continue but the civil war has ground to a halt, allowing several hundreds of thousands of refugees to return home.
