Usher Finds New Sound on Looking 4 Myself

10_usherThis post is in partnership with Consequence of Sound, an online music publication devoted to the ever growing and always thriving worldwide music scene.
Ever since he broke through with his 1997 release My WayUsher has maintained cultural relevance. He has never had a comeback because there never was a decrease in his popularity. For 15 years, he has seamlessly conquered the R&B and hip-hop scene, endured while peers faltered, and then conquered some more. The seven-time Grammy winner is continuously emulated (see: Brown, Chris), but his tenure as a superstar is rivaled only by legends (see: Jackson, Michael). “Simply put: Evolve or evaporate,” Usher told Spin in an interview earlier this month. “That’s how you stick around. Evolve or evaporate. You have to be cognizant of what’s going on around you. You can’t be so bold and reluctant to be receptive to change that you don’t allow yourself to grow.” This makes sense; creativity spawns unique art, and creativity, by nature, is never stagnant.
What is compelling about Usher’s new album, Looking 4 Myself, is how he tries to develop an amalgam of the musical ingredients he has toyed with in the past to produce a new genre he coins “revolutionary pop.” In other words, he’s never needed a career rejuvenation, but in his new album, he’s reinventing himself anyway. And that willingness to progress at the risk of failure is why Usher still matters in 2012 while artists like Next are an afterthought.
The 14 tracks on Looking 4 Myself leave the listener enticed, mainly because there is no pattern to what the next song has to offer. There is no coherent approach in a thematic sense. In fact, Usher more or less concedes this record forays into a new musical sphere, and much of the record is storytelling from a fictional standpoint, rather then a personal diary. “People often assume that each and every thing that you say, you go through,” Usher explained later in the interview. “But that’s not true. There has to be some sort of element of entertainment and artistry where you kind of dream things up. I’ve always wanted to be a person who wanted to introduce myself to different people. That conversation hasn’t ever changed, but now, I have music that speaks to that, so it’s easier for people to understand who I am as an artist.” The lyrical freedom allowed by the musical experimentation is refreshing, especially after previous releases like Confessions and Raymond v. Raymond gave listeners a front row seat on Usher’s personal trauma. And without that baggage, we’re left analyzing the music, which again, is fittingly arbitrary.
There are four working genres in play here: Usher’s classic mold of hip-hop and R&B as well as the derivatives of each style. For example, “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” and “Scream” are aggressively seductive club songs in the same vein of previous hits such as “Yeah!”  and his collaboration with David Guetta on “Without You”. But the “revolutionary pop”counter to those tracks are “Show Me”, “Twisted” and, most notably, “Numb”. On the surface, these three songs are archetypal electronic dance anthems, but they are bolstered by more complex vocal construction.
Meanwhile, Usher boasts his superior R&B vocal range in “Climax” and “Dive”. Each track has its moment but teeter toward mediocrity when no payoff occurs (Side note: ironic that “Climax” has no, uh, climax. If this was intentional, it went over my head, and I’ll tip my hat to Usher. Well played.). However, “What Happened To U” and “Sins Of My Father” display the same vocal prowess but are matched with beats of higher sophistication which avers his earnest attempt to deviate from a traditional blend of R&B and hip-hop.
Although Usher circumvents writing from personal narrative, in “Numb” he appears to inadvertently describe the logic behind the musical ambition permeating Looking 4 Myself when he sings, “Keep on doing the same old thing/Are you expecting change/Is that really insanity/Or just a loser’s game.” The context of these lines are within the prism of a tumultuous relationship, but isolated, the words parallel Usher’s goals with this record. One can’t help but wonder, if even an artist with the level of success Usher has enjoyed, did he ask himself whether it is insane to waver from a proven formula? The cliché, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” is profoundly accurate in many facets of life, but can also lead to complacency. Usher doesn’t subscribe to that platitude, he relies on his own mantra, “Evolve or evaporate.”
Essential Tracks: “Numb”, “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop”, and “Sins Of My Father”

CHRIS BROWN Talks to Cops Lawyer Goes After Drake

0614_chris_brown_drake_tmz_1
According to tmz Chris Brown has spoken with New York Police Dept. detectives about the bar fight that left a gash in his chin ... and law enforcement sources tell us his lawyer has given the NYPD "physical evidence" which allegedly shows Drake was involved in the melee.

We're told Chris' lawyer, Mark Geragos, went to the NYPD late Thursday to present evidence showing that Drake and Meek Mill were the aggressors, but earlier in the day Chris spoke with Detectives at an undisclosed location in NYC. Cops tell us Chris is not currently a suspect but rather "a witness and a victim."  We're also told Drake is not currently a suspect.

On the other side, we're told Drake has been "cooperating" with authorities, but we do not know if he has spoken to cops -- it appears his representatives have had conversations with detectives.

Sources tell us ... the bad guy here may be someone in Chris' camp, who was inciting Drake and his people all night.

As we previously reported both Chris and Drake were trash talking each other before the fight, flipping each other off and what not.

Drake And Chris Brown Fights Over Ex Lover Rihanna! Turns NYC Nightclub Into A ‘War Zone’!

And it got nastier by the minute!
Chris Brown, 23, dated Rihanna until she dumped him after he savagely beat her on the eve of her performance at the Grammy Awards in 2009. After their breakup, the beauty from Barbados was romantically linked with rapper Drake.
Reports indicate Rihanna, 24, is in the process of getting back together with Chris Brown.
The New York Police Department is investigating the fight, which broke out at Club W.i.P in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan.
A spokesman said investigators believe Chris Brown, his bodyguard and a woman with him were trying to leave the club about 4am when they were confronted by five members of Drake’s posse.
As they were squaring off, someone — police don’t know who yet — threw a bottle.
Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham, was not in the group that confronted Chris Brown, NYPD Lt John Grimple told Mail Online.
Hollie, the injured tourist, told TMZ.com she went to W.i.P. with friends on Wednesday night, unaware they were sitting in between two angry rappers and their entourages.
Suddenly, all hell broke loose.
‘Within a few moments of noticing glass being thrown around, I saw a glass bottle headed towards me, consequently hitting me in the head.’ she told TMZ.
‘I immediately started to bleed and proceeded to fall in and out of consciousness.’
The source said someone from Drake’s entourage, possibly the singer himself, threw a bottle.
‘Once the bottle was thrown, all hell broke loose and there were more bottles thrown.’
The fight allegedly kicked off as the last song was playing, just before 4 a.m.
Police were already at the scene because it was closing time and that they ‘were on it in seconds and began getting everyone out of the club.’
Pictures of the aftermath show the club floor strewn with broken glass.
Brown was pulled out of the situation by his own security and helped out of the club while Drake was pulled to the back of the club, the source said. ‘[Drake] was one of the last out of W.I.P.’
The New York Police department confirmed to the Global Grind that the two singers’ crews got into a fight at Manhattan nightclub – 5 people were injured in the melee including Chris’ bodyguard who suffered a serious cut to the head, two other men and two women suffered minor cuts. At least three were hospitalised
Police were looking at surveillance footage and talking to patrons who witnessed the melee. No arrests have been made and no complaints filed.
Drake has today denied he was involved in ‘any kind last night at W.i.P.’ His spokeswoman said in a statement: ‘He was on his way out of the club when the altercation began.
He did not engage in any activity which resulted in injury to person or damage to property.’
Chris Brown’s publicist released a statement saying the R&B singer and his friends ‘were victims of a brutal attack last night at WIP. They sustained several injuries. Chris and his party are cooperating with NY authorities who are pursuing this incident further.
Chris Brown and Toronto rapper Drake two have had a war of words since both being romantically attached to Rihanna.
The fight will further fuel rumors regarding the closeness of Rihanna to Chris Brown.
Meanwhile Rihanna and Chris Brown…..
Earlier this week the two pop superstars partied at the same club at the same time for the second time in as many days, leaving within minutes of each other.TMZ reported the pair were in the club together for around 30 minutes and Brown spent some time with the ‘Rude Girl’ singer at her table.
Sitting in different booths, the couple still ‘kept a close eye on each other’ – and Brown sent her over two bottles of Ace of Spades Champagne.

A video surfaced earlier this week of the pair leaving the club minutes apart.
The lovelorn pair have been linked together several times already this year, after it emerged that they had recorded songs with each other.
