Independence Square Is Venue For Mills’ Funeral

independence-square PRESIDENT MILLS DEATHThe Independence Square also known as the Black Star Square has been set as the venue for the funeral ceremony of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
According to the Funeral Committee set up to oversee a successful burial, the venue was chosen to accommodate the huge crowd that would throng to the grounds.
In a move to control crowd as well as reduce heavy vehicular traffic, giant screens will be mounted at vantage point including the Accra and El-wak Sports stadia for the general public to have a feel of what is taking place at the main grounds.
At a press briefing on Friday, the Chairman of the Funeral Committee, Totobi Quakye in outlining the arrangements stated that due to the lack of foresight, the committee experienced challenges in planning the funeral but was quick to add that the committee made its possible best to make the arrangements successful.

The £670,000 Porsche

It’s the supercar set to please both petrolheads and the green lobby.
For Porsche has released images of its new 201mph 918 Spyder which is set to be more economical than a Toyota Prius.
It will be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in less than three seconds – making it faster than most supercars on the road.Porsche claim the 918 will be capable of 94mpg. (Picture: SWNS)
But it is also going to be as attractive to the green lobby as it is the Top Gear audience thanks to some incredible eco-statistics.
Porsche claim the 918, which is a ‘plug-in hybrid’, will be capable of 94mpg – making it twice as economical as a 1.6-litre Ford Focus.
In comparison, a Toyota Prius will do 72.4mpg while the greenest version of the UK’s biggest-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, manages 78.5mpg.
This is because of Porsche’s new hybrid system where two electric motors generate power alongside the car’s 4.6-litre V8 engine.
There is also an ‘EV’ mode where the car can be driven for around 15 miles entirely on electric power at a top speed of 93mph.
It will only emit an average of 70g/km of carbon dioxide, making any UK-registered models exempt of road tax as well as the London Congestion Charge.
The level of emissions means UK registered models will be exempt of road tax. (Picture: SWNS)
However, this new model is greener and faster than the average family car, it is also around 30 times more expensive – costing £670,000.
The convertible supercar was first announced as a prototype at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show but Porsche has just released these images of the car undergoing full testing.
And executives at the Stuttgart company say the 918 Spyder, which will be limited to just 918 models, will go into full production by September 2013.
Wolfgang Hatz, member of the executive board research and development of Porsche AG, said: ‘What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance.’

WOODEN CAR

First Wooden Car Launched… Faster Than A Porsche

Believe it or not an American, Joe Harmon has designed a car which is made almost entirely of wood. Thecar, called Splinter, was said to have been designed as his graduate project at the Industrial Design course – North Carolina State University.

Amazingly, the chassis, body, wheels and a large proportion of suspension are also made of wood, and it is super fast too – even more than a Porsche or a Lamborghini. . Other specifications of the car include:
Engine: 4.3liter turbocharged V8
Horsepower: 600bhp
Weight: 2500lb
Dimensions:
Length 174.5in
Width 82.0in
Height 42.0in
Wheelbase 105.0in
The entire car, which is made from a combination of maple, plywood and MDF, weighs just 1,134kg – some 240kg less than the super lightweight Porsche. The eco-friendly two seater, which is fitted with a six-speed, manual gearbox, can sprint from 0 to 60mph in just over three seconds!
The ‘Splinter’ car can turn out a whopping 700bhp from its twin supercharged, 4.6litre V8 engin – almost 300bhp more than a Porsche 911. And with a top speed of a staggering 240mph, it will leave the Porsche or even the brand new Lamborghini Revanton behind.
According to Harmon, “The light weight is achieved through careful design and composite construction… The Splinter is not made from any carved-out, solid chunks of wood, but rather moulded laminates.”
So, if offered a ride in the splinter, would you hop in?

10 surprising things you may be addicted to

We all have certain activities we love, but did you know you could be addicted to your favourite hobby? Check out the 10 surprising things you may be addicted to.

Surprising addiction 1: Surfing the internet

You may think that browsing the internet is nothing more than a pleasant way to pass some time. However, researchers in China revealed that internet addiction actually alters the brain in a similar way to addictions to drugs and alcohol. It is thought that sufferers of Internet addiction disorder (IAD) could face similar symptoms to those suffering from other addictions, including withdrawal symptoms. One study of users of internet-ready smartphones found that many are so addicted to their device they now hear “phantom vibrations” in their desperation to receive a message.

Surprising addiction 2: Falling in love

We all know that person who goes from relationship to relationship, never seeming to spend more than five minutes alone. Well, according to research, it may be that they are actually addicted to falling in love! Yep, that heart-racing, euphoric feeling of falling in love… turns out you can get hooked on it.
According to psychologist Arthur Aron who led a study investigating love addiction, falling in love activates the same system in the brain as drug addiction, making you crave that feeling again as soon as the first flush of love starts to fade.

Falling in love can be addictiveSurprising addiction 3: Sugar

We all crave our favourite sweet treat from time to time, but did you know you may actually be addicted to snacks such as doughnuts and chocolate? Studies have suggested that when we eat sugary snacks, chemicals called opiods are released in the brain, leading to intense feelings of pleasure and it is this feeling we often crave in the absence of sugar. In fact, according to research by a University of California team, sugar is both as damaging and as addictive as both alcohol and cigarettes.

Surprising addiction 4: Tattoos and piercings

While dabbling in body art will not necessarily lead to you becoming inked up and pierced from head to toe, many people who start out with the intention of getting one tattoo or piercing will feel compelled to get more, which can feel like an addiction. While it is debatable whether this is a true addiction, it is certainly a compulsion for many, which may be partly due to the rush of feel-good endorphins which are released during the process of getting a tattoo to help you cope with the pain.

Surprising addiction 5: Work

Although most of us look forward to the weekends, for those suffering from a work addiction, those days away from the office may not be quite as treasured. While many of us jokingly use the term “workaholic”, research suggests this is a real condition that can jeopardize sufferers’ health and relationships – it is not simply a case of “working hard”. According to a Spanish study, around 12% of workers in Spain suffer from the addiction, while in Japan “death by overwork” (karoshi) is thought to cause an estimated 1000 deaths per year.

Surprising addiction 6: Tanning

Research findings published in the journal Addiction Biology suggest that exposure to ultraviolet rays in the form of sunshine or tanning beds can cause changes in brain activity similar to drug addiction, keeping you hooked on tanning. According to Dr. Bryon Adinoff, an author of the study, the brain responds toUV light in areas that are associated with reward, causing some people to develop an addiction (“Tanorexia”) despite the potentially fatal health risks of tanning.
Sunbathing can be addictiveSurprising addiction 7: Video games
Across the world, teenagers are holed up in their rooms in front of television or computer screens feverishly playing video games, yet research suggests this may not be as harmless as it seems. A 2006 BBC-reported lecture revealed that 12 per cent of online gamers polled reported some addictive behaviours, while many countries across the world have set up treatment centres to deal with this growing addiction. Just like any addiction, compulsive gaming can jeopardise relationships and careers, and there have even been cases of excessive gamers dying from exhaustion.

Surprising addiction 8: Shopping

Most of us love buying something new, whether it is the latest life-enhancing gadget or a gift for a loved one. However, for some, buying new things can become a destructive addiction. Shopping addiction (or omniomania) is thought to be caused by a rush of endorphins and dopamine which cause the shopper to experience a temporary “high” which they want to experience again. Many shopping addicts use shopping as a way to escape from negative feelings or situations in their life, however the addiction can actually lead to further problems both financially and emotionally.

Surprising addiction 9: Lip balm

While not a chemical addiction such as that to alcohol and cigarettes, applying lip balm can definitely be habit-forming. This is because while lip balm offers a temporary moisture boost for dry lips, it can interfere with the process of cellular turnover and the production of natural moisture, leading you to apply more and more lip balm to counteract these drying effects. While it may not be life-threatening or recognised as an official illness, many websites and Facebook groups have been set up dedicated to this potentially expensive addiction.

Surprising addiction 10: Music

We all have our favourite songs, the ones we listen to over and over again, but did you ever consider you could be addictive to your favourite music? According to a study by researchers at McGill University, you may well be. The study revealed that when we listen to music we experience a natural “high” and our body releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter also released when people take drugs or eat pleasurable foods. According to the researchers, dopamine makes us want to repeat behaviours, which is the reason we can become addicted to our favourite music.

7 Foods That Cause Body Odour

7 Foods That Cause Body Odour

Blamed on everything from genes, to cheap perfume, even occupation, or the type of food you ate, body odour can be crowned as the single biggest turning off factor in social interactions.
Some experts might blame it on the excessive use of deodorants and some might blame it on the biological composition of your body, but many unanimously agree that some specific types of food items can lead to body odour. Zoom in on our list of top 7 foods that cause body odour and consume them in moderation if you are a regular victim of this disorder.
Spicy food
A spice overload can lead to excessive sulfur in your food intake, which will be eliminated through skin’s pores and breath. Ensure that you eat well-balanced meals that aren’t too heavy on garlic, onions or piping hot curries.
Red meat
Red meat requires maximum digestion effort for your body to process. Over-eating will lead to issues liker perspiration and unwanted sweat. While vegetarians might not have such issues with their limited food intake, fenugreek and other strong flavoured plants cause similar results.
Alcohol
Chocolate, soda, tea, coffee, alcohol – consuming any of these in excess causes body odour as when you drink them atleast 10% of it will be left unprocessed causing perspiration. Excessive alcohol, in particular, may cause body odour.
Junk foods
Excessive consumption of junk foods with next to no exercise routine, will lead to accumulation of fatty cells inside your body which is the chief reason behind sweating and BO. They lead to unwanted breath and body odour as the food takes longer than their healthier counterparts to get digested. Foods high in hydrogenated oil, sugar, flour, salt and so on are not good when consumed in excess.
Low carbs
diet which does not contain carbs can lead to a greater release of sweat in the body and also excess of protein foods. This process leads to a release of chemical called ketones in your bloodstream which lead to unwanted smell.
Dairy products
Again, dairy products are rich in protein and high consumption of these food items will take longer for your stomach to digest them. Excess consumption of dairy products can lead to release of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan in the body which can easily trigger off a foul smell.
Tobacco
We all know it. When the smoke of cigarettes mingles with other sweat glands in the body it’ll lead to a release of a distinctive smell which leads to a specific ‘smoker’ smell that lingers on everything from clothing to hair.

Nigeria: 52 Sex Workers Rounded Up in Lagos

52 commercial sex workers have been arrested by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit. The ladies, with ages ranging between 18 and 34, were raided at different locations in Isaac John and Toyin streets at Ikeja by policemen attached to the unit.
The exercise became necessary as a result of several complaints from the residents of the area about the activities of these nocturnal beings. The raid was said to have taken place between 10pm on Wednesday and 1am on Thursday.
Details of the raid were provided by a source within the taskforce: “We started moving round Toyin Street and later Isaac John Street to know where the prostitute usually stand to solicit for customers… as soon as we were satisfied, we started arresting them. The excercise did not last for more than three hours.”
Chairman of the Task Force, Superintendent Bayo Sulaiman, also confirmed the incident, saying, “There had been complaint by residents against a surge of commercial sex workers on Isaac John and Toyin streets… Isaac John Street is where we have the Government House and it is a criminal offence to solicit for sex by roadside.” He then warned that the task force would extend its raids to Lagos Island, Ikoyi and Victoria Island where he said commercial sex activities had been on the increase.

7 simple ways to make your day better

How to make your day better 1: Wake up a few minutes earlier

You know the scenario; you wake up in a flurry of panic the moment your alarm goes off because you need to be on time for work. You rush around the house trying to get ready but somehow get more cereal down your crisp white shirt than in your mouth; you put the milk in the dishwasher instead of the fridge; and, as you rush from room to room your sleeve gets stuck on the door handle, sending you hurtling back a metre as you were mid-way through marching out of the living room on a mission (is there anything more annoying when you’re in a rush?). As you can probably relate to from this example, being short of time makes your stress levels rise and you’re in a pickle faster than you can say “should have set my alarm earlier”. Make your mornings easier by setting your alarm 15 minutes before you need to get up. This will leave plenty of time for your body and mind to wake up so you can get ready without the stress.

How to make your day better 2: Make a happy list

Sometimes we dwell on the things that make us sad rather than concentrating on what makes us happy. It takes a little brain training to change your thought process from negative to positive, and a good way to do this is make a list of things that make you happy and keep referring to it every time you feel sad. Whether you want to write down your favourite quote from a movie, the date of a holiday you have booked, or you stick down a photograph of yourself on one of the happiest days of your life, it’s sure to lift your spirits when you’re feeling down in the dumps. Corny? Yes. Helpful? Most definitely.

How to make your day better 3: Sniff a lemon

Yep, you read that right. To improve your day, simply sniff a lemon. Scientists at Tel Aviv University suggest that citrus fragrances – particularly lemon – can alleviate depression and boost our mood. Indeed, the smell of a lemon boosts your levels of serotonin (a feel-good hormone) and lowers levels of norepinephrine (a stress hormone), so improve your day by burning a lemon scented candle or spritzing on a lemony fragrance, or you could just go all out and sniff a lemon.
Sniff a lemon to boost your mood

How to make your day better 4: Cuddle someone

With the soaring popularity of the ‘cuddle party’ phenomenon, more and more people are discovering the benefits of a good snuggle. A warm embrace boosts the natural feel-good hormones released by the body, reduces stress, and creates a feeling of mutual trust. Beware though, whilst cuddling is a great mood-enhancer, we do recommend that you be selective over whom you choose to embrace; your boss or the window cleaner may not appreciate a cuddle as much as your spouse or your pet. If you prefer something a little less intimate, there’s nothing to stop you from expressing your feelings through a man hug (yes, this can be done by the ladies too), or maybe even a high-five to release those happy hormones.

How to make your day better 5: Sweat it out

Encourage your body’s natural feel good hormones to give your mood – and ultimately your day – a boost. Walk the dog, go for a run, or dance around the living room for half an hour; anything that gets your blood pumping and makes you sweat will do the trick. The endorphins released during exercise are scientifically proven to boost your mood, making any form of physical activity a sure-fire way to boost your day.

How to make your day better 6: Have a bath

Rather than that quick dash in and out of the shower, make some me-time and have a bubble bath and some time to work on your personal appearance. Our day always seems to go better when we look and feel our best, so gentlemen, have a shave and use a deep moisturising balm. Ladies, apply face and hair masks and paint your nails alongside your bath. It’s surprising how much a little me-time can perk up your day.

How to make your day better 7: Prioritise your tasks

A common reason for us to be having a bad day is stress. Having a long list of tasks to do can be overwhelming so tackle any problems head-on at the start of the day to get them out of the way as early as possible. Tackling your problems in the morning will eliminate feelings of worry throughout the rest of your day. A good way to prioritise your tasks is to write them all down and thennumber them from one to 10, with one being the most important, and 10 being the least important. Work your way through the tasks starting with the most important first, and tick them off as you go along. You will feel a sense of achievement each time you tick a task off.
