15-year-old Nigerian girl wins Spellbound Africa competition

After correctly spelling 37 words live on-stage, 15 year-old Ibukun Omoyeni of Prince of Glory College, Lagos, spelt the word myxomatosis to win the 2012 edition of Spellbound Africa recently held at Abuja. He beat children from 13 other states and the FCT to successfully defend the Title won by Gbemileke Oyefeso also of Lagos State in 2011.
In second position was 12 year old Hauwa’u Lawal of Jigawa State Academy For the Gifted and Talented, Bamaina. She spelt 37 words correctly. Adaeze Williams of Divine Mercy Secondary School, Abuja came third, while Olivia Okechukwu of Community Senior Secondary school Oyingbo, Rivers State, came fourth.
The children studied 3,000 english words for 3 months from which words were chosen for them to spell. Words like phantasmagoria, arteriosclerosis, neuroinformatics, discombobulated, higgledy-piggledy etc were spelt.
At this event, the Guest of Honour, the Governor of Jigawa State, represented by Alhaji Isa Audu, received the annual SUPER-DAD AWARD from organisers of the competition Ski-Hi Entertainment for his contribution to education in Jigawa State. He restated his commitment to education as a means of preparing the young generation for the challenges ahead of them. Aero Contractors also received the Most Supportive & Reliable Brand Award 2012 for consistently supporting this project.
Spellbound Africa is an annual spelling competition for children studying in the English-speaking African countries. It is for children between 10 and 15 years old and has run for four years now.

I’ll bounce back soon – Blackface Naija

The story of the Nigerian music industry remains incomplete without the inclusion of Augustine Garuba Ahmedu, otherwise known as Blackface Naija of the defunct Plantashun Boiz.
Unknown to many, Blackface Naija who co-owns African Queen, the song that gave 2face Idiba fame remains a force to reckon with in the ever-growing Nigeria’s music industry.
Asked what has been happening around him lately, the Idoma-born music star would always say “It is all about music. This is the path I’ve chosen, this is where I belong and here I will remain.”
In this brief chat with DailyPost Correspondent, Comrade Ameh, the Hard Life crooner dismissed the news making the rounds that his wife abandoned him because he’s broke. “I don’t see that as an issue, if they say my wife left me because I’m broke; good and fine but the good thing is that I’ve never complained to any of them. They can say whatever they want to say, but the truth is that once you are in something and it doesn’t work out, you have to let go.”
“It is true that my wife has left me, but it has nothing to do with my status. I can tell you now that I’m not missing her, I’m only missing my two kids, Alex and Caroline,” he added.
Speaking further, he said: “I would like to tell my fans to watch out for my forthcoming album. I was only quiet, reflecting over my new musical approach, which is not conventional. I think I have a new way of doing things all together. I’ll soon bounce back. My best is yet to come, I haven’t gone anywhere”
Asked if he will still reconcile with his estranged wife , the father of two said: “I think music is now my wife. Maybe one day I will give that a second thought but for now, music is my life, my wife.”
Asked when the much awaited Plantashun Boiz’ album would hit the market shelves, the ace songwriter cuts in: ‘I even answered this very question last week. For Christ sake where is that one coming from? Some people could be funny sha.
“I said it before and if you want to hear I will tell you again. Right now, I am working on my fourth album entitled Defender and until that is actualized I don’t see any other thing coming on board. I don’t rush my things, so the project is not on my mind” he affirmed.
Finding out what must have gone wrong with Plantashun Boiz, he said “We still keep in touch, we are not fighting. 2face is my brother and Faze is my friend and colleague in the industry. The name Plantashun Boiz won’t die but I don’t see us coming back as a band again. We must move ahead.
On why he’s not making waves like 2face and Faze, Blackface said, it’s all about destiny. “We all have our fans and followers. Go to the market, my albums are still selling up till today. My first solo album, Ghetochild was a hit. I don’t blow my trumpet, like I would always say, a dog that bites doesn’t bite indiscriminately.”
When asked to comment on how he came up with the song, African Queen, Blackface said, “that is an old story na. I think you are a journalist and there is something called stalled news? How can you be asking me of something that happened over ten years back in 2012? As far as I am concerned that is an old story.
When prodded further if he is getting royalty from 2face, the three-times album star and graduate of Business Administration said. “You na case o, where you dey here all these sef? You know that I can’t answer that question.

Diarrhoea kills 194,000 children yearly in Nigeria – UNICEF

UNICEF has revealed that lack of clean toilet remains one of the leading causes of illness and death among children.
According to the report released by UNICEF and made available to newsmen in Maiduguri, Nigeria, it was estimated that diarrhoea kills about 194,000 children under five every year and in addition, respiratory infections kill another 240,000.
The report said that, these are largely preventable with improvements in water, sanitation and hygiene.
It further said, globally, UNICEF is supporting 50 countries including Nigeria to implement Community Approaches to Total Sanitation such as Community Led Total Sanitation (CATS) aimed at empowering communities to identify their sanitation challenges and take necessary actions to end open defecation.
According to a joint UNICEF and World Health Organization’s report of 2012, it is estimated that 34 million Nigerians practice open defecation and Nigeria is amongst top 5 countries in the world with the highest number of people defecating in the open.
UNICEF country representative, Ibrahim Fall said “Community Led Total Sanitation aims to make all communities free of open defecation by focusing on social and behaviour change and the use of affordable, appropriate technologies. The emphasis is on the sustainable use of sanitation facilities rather than the construction of infrastructure, and the approach depends on the engagement of members of the community ranging from individuals, to schools, to traditional leaders. Communities use their own capacities to attain their objectives and take a central role in planning and implementing improved sanitation.”
In Nigeria, UNICEF in partnership with relevant government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as donors such as European Union and UK Aid, is supporting implementation of Community Led Total Sanitation (LTS) in 30 States, and over 2 million people living in more than 3,000 open defecation free communities are estimated to be using toilets as a result.
With continuous support from governments and other partners in scaling up this approach, more Nigerians will live in open defecation free communities.
“Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is simple and an effective way of improving access to sanitation while also paving the way for their improved health”, says Ibrahima Fall, UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria.
The statement further said that the approach has been found to be appropriate and the best way to ensure improved and sustained access to sanitation is to empower communities to provide toilets for themselves. No external support from Governments or other agencies can provide toilets to all un-served people in the country.

35-year-old mother of two boys commits suicide after finding out she’s pregnant with male twins

A pregnant mother-of-two who desperately wanted a daughter jumped from a cliff-top when she discovered the twins she was carrying were boys, a coroner’s court has been told.
Anna Byrne, 35, a nurse from Dunboyne, County Meath, was left ‘devastated’ when ultrasound scans in March this year showed she would be having two more boys. In the months before her death she noticed baby girls everywhere and avoided her friends – particularly those with daughters.
In the early hours of March 8, six days after attending a psychiatrist complaining that she was feeling low, she jumped from a cliff-top at Howth summit, Dublin, the city’s Coroner’s Court was told.
Mrs Byrne was in the last days of her pregnancy and was due to give birth by caesarean section on March 29.
Her husband Terry described the final conversation the couple had before she died. He said at the inquest into her death: ‘We told each other that we loved each other and she said “I’ll see ya later”.’
The coroner returned an open verdict because he could not say beyond reasonable doubt that the mother intended to take her own life.
Dr John Sheehan, consultant psychiatrist at the Rotunda hospital in Dublin, said he met Anna and her husband on March 2 and considered her at ‘low risk’ from self-harm.
The heavily-pregnant Mrs Byrne had been referred into his care by a midwife after she admitted her mood was low.
She had suffered from depression from her early 20s and her first pregnancy in 2004 ended in miscarriage.
She went on to give birth to two little boys, Joe and Aidan.
‘However, she felt part of her life was missing because she had two sons and no daughter,’ Dr Sheehan said.
Mrs Byrne found out 20 weeks into her third pregnancy that she was carrying boys again. She was left ‘devastated’ and unable to sleep for several nights.
She admitted to her GP she didn’t feel maternal and also felt ‘overwhelmed’ at the prospect of having four boys.
‘She began to notice baby girls everywhere’, Dr Sheehan said.
Terry Byrne said his wife ‘put on a front’ to friends and family, but privately was ‘drained’.
The couple had talked about flying to Greece, where they would be allowed to select the sex of their child through assisted reproduction treatment.
Dr Sheehan added that Mrs Byrne had been tearful at times during their meeting but showed no signs she was feeling suicidal.
He increased her dosage of anti-depressants and prescribed anti-histamine to help her sleep. Mr Byrne spoke of his final contact with his wife the day before she died.
She had been heading to the supermarket when they spoke on the phone at about 11am on March 7.
Mr Byrne said: ‘At the end of the call, I told her to phone anytime if there was anything. We told each other that we loved each other and she said “I’ll see ya later”.’
He first became aware she was missing at 1.30pm when she failed to collect their son from Montessori School.
Mr Byrne checked with the supermarket and all the local maternity hospitals, and rang her friends.
He called Gardai in Dunboyne at 3.30pm and just after midnight, her car was found by a friend at Howth summit. Gardai found a ‘heart-rending’ farewell note in the car.
A search and rescue operation followed but was called off at 3.30am and her body was recovered from the base of the cliff at 7.49am.
It was established that Mrs Byrne had been dead for eight to ten hours and a post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as the multiple injuries due to a fall from a height.

Two sisters confirmed dead after building collapses in Lagos

Ex-banker goes berserk, abandons home on hunger strike, because of FG’s failure to pay terminal benefits

For Mr. Olubiyi Odunaro, former employee of the defunct Hallmark Bank Plc, life indeed has not been a bed of roses.
In a bid to make Federal Government pay his terminal benefit, the 53-year old man who claimed to have been on hunger strike since November 12, has also turned part of the garden on Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way, Lagos into his new home. The ex-banker vowed to remain unmoved until he gets his dues.
It could be recalled in 2005 when Central Bank of Nigeria adopted a recapitalization policy for all Banks, unfortunately Hallmark was one of the banks which did not meet with the order, thus, it folded up and rendered all its employees jobless.
When Newsmen visited Odunaro in his self made home in the garden, he was caught reading a novel written by Nelson Mandela with the title ‘Long walk to freedom’.
Speaking further on the major reasons he chose to suffer himself in such manner, a dark aged man explained that he embarked on the protest to fight for his rights and that of his affected colleagues of about 14,000 people from the 14 banks that failed to meet up with the recapitalization policy. He also intend to expose the insensitivity of the Federal Government to pay the terminal entitlements.
Recalling the steps he took before the self imposed hunger strike, Odunaro said he wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan on October 24 informing him of his decision to go without food if the agencies concerned did not pay them their entitlements on or before October 31.
According to him, “I feel downcast with the turn of events in our country and I drew the passion to embark on a hunger strike from my disenchantment to the deliberate denial of common citizens’ rights.
“Before, I began this hunger strike, I sought the consent of my family members and I also underwent a comprehensive medical examination. I erected that tent with N27,000 and it is now my new home.”
Lamenting on the deteriorating condition of his health,  Odunaro said, “Though I take water at 8pm every day, It’s gradually taking a toll on me as I have started losing weight.
“But My personal doctor came to examine me on Friday and he said I am not doing bad health wise. There have been pleas from friends and other loved ones to end this strike, but I will continue with the hunger strike until the FG pays us our lawful entitlements.”
He also grieved over Federal Government’s non adherence to the  laid down procedures contained in the Guidelines and Incentives on Consolidation in the Nigerian Banking Industry
“It wasn’t our wish or our making to be out of jobs. The CBN in its own wisdom introduced the recapitalization policy and afterwards withdrew the operating license of Hallmark Bank where I worked and 13 other banks for failing to meet up with the recapitalization policy deadline.
“But, seven years on, the guidelines on consolidation which make provision for our compensation in view of the development had not been followed.
On a personal note, I even took it upon myself to get President Goodluck Jonathan informed by posting series of comments about this issue on his Facebook page.
Unfortunately, nothing has been done and many of us live a deplorable way of life with the majority unable to meet obligations to their children and other dependants.
Thirty-eight people from just three banks that I know of have died and one of the employees of Hallmark Bank committed suicide in Aba, Abia State, as a result of his inability to eke out a living”, he said painfully.

Abramovich sacks Di Matteo after Juventus defeat

Roman Abramovich, has once again shown his impatience with managers, after he sacked Roberto Di Matteo this morning. The Italian has been shown the door at Stamford Bridge, just six months after landing the elusive Champions League trophy, as well as the FA Cup.
Chelsea’s official Twittter account broke the news, even before a statement appeared on their website.
“Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo,” the statement read.
“The team’s recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season.
“The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts.
“The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club’s history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.
“The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager.’”
Just last night, the London side were soundly beaten in Turin by Juventus, three days after losing 2-1 to Di Matteo’s former side, West Brom.
Former Liverpool boss, Rafael Benitez, has been linked with the vacant, as the Russian’s preferred choice, Pep Guardiola, is still on his sabbatical in New York.
