The cry of a baby into a family ought to stir some joy and immeasurable happiness but the reverse was the case when a 25-year-old woman, Ms Toyin Akinbobola, dumped her day-old baby inside a pit toilet at Idanre, Ondo State.
DailyPost learnt nemesis caught up with Toyin, when the cry of the innocent baby attracted a young boy who wanted to use the toilet moments she had carried out the criminal act. Shocked by his discovery, the boy called the attention of other neighbours to help save the baby’s life.
Immediately, some of the residents dashed off and made a formal report to the Olofin Police Station.
On the arrival of the police, the baby which has been covered with excreta and maggots was removed from the stench and rushed to Idanre General Hospital from where she was later referred to the Mother and Child Hospital in Akure for a comprehensive medical treatment.
Painfully, although the baby’s life was saved, medical reports indicated that one of her ears and left eye has been damaged by the maggots.
However, acting on the directives of Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs, the poor baby has been taken to the Motherless babies’ home on Akure-Oba-Ile Road.
Meanwhile, all efforts to apprehend the perpetrator of the evil act proved abortive, as she had fled the town.
Nemesis finally caught up with Akinbobola at Omifun village where her mother had a farm, thus she was arrested.
She was later arraigned on a three-count charge, contrary to Section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Laws of Ondo State, 1978.
According to remorseful Akinbobola, who claimed she is pregnant again, one of her mother’s labourers on the farm was responsible for the pregnancy.
Consequently, the magistrate, Mrs. Folashade Aduroja found the accused guilty as charged and thereby sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment, adding that her case would serve as deterrent to others.
She will serve her term at Olokuta Prisons, Akure
